Much of what we believe is in our name. We’re a placed based organization rooted in downtown Windsor. We are a community of neighbours working together for the renewal of our neighbourhoods and our city. And we collaborate with anyone who shares our vision that our city would be a good place to grow up and grow old. Undergirding who we are is a set of values that are core to our being. Five of those values stem from asset based community development, and four are specific to our community.
Gifts. We believe that every neighbour has something to bring to community; everyone has unique gifts and skills. As we look to cultivate neighbourhood community, we recognize that a needs-based approach offers us very little to work with. Instead, the gifts of our neighbours are the ingredients needed.
Associations. Recognizing that every individual has gifts and skills to offer, associations are where those gifts come to life. They are small groups of people working with a common interest toward a common goal. Associational life exists in our community gardens, in our barrier free sports, and in all of kinds of micro-neighbourliness that brings people together.
Local Places. From sidewalks to green spaces, cafes to public parks, we value the physical assets that add joy and vibrancy to our neighbourhoods. A place might be a centre of natural resources, a hub of activity, living skills, transit connection or marketplace. Whatever the strengths of a place are, the people of the community will be the closest to understanding it.
Exchange. Part of our desire is to move beyond the exchange of money and instead move into the exchange of tangibles and intangibles. Through bartering, swapping, sharing, a
nd trading, we can be a community that exchanges tangibles. Through hospitality, kindness, and the giving of our own gifts and talents, we can be a community that exchanges intangibles.
Storytelling. Storytelling is a powerful medium for establishing relational connection, deepening understanding, and developing empathy. Stories act as powerful connection points between difference within a community. We aspire to tell stories that nourish the soul, that celebrate and lament, and that honour the people and places involved.
Faithful Presence is our rootedness to a particular people and place, to being present as we live, work, play, and pray.
Engagement is our vocational calling to be a people of advocacy and hospitality, reaching out and welcoming in, doing justice and loving mercy.
Hopeful Imagination is our prayerful desire to see the people and places around us with the eyes of God, as gift, as being made in the image of God, and as deserving of loving community.
Interdependence is our recognition that we need each other. We are not alone in this. This means we shed our tendencies toward independence.
